Paula Salome Gomes Lopes, known professionally as PSG Lopes, defines herself as a hearing-impaired Portuguese-American self-published author . Ms. Lopes is the sole proprietor of The Moonlit Goddess Publishing LLC. To date, she has self-published five poetry anthologies (Dark Musings Poetry Anthologies: Volumes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5), three children’s books (Little Stan’s Lucky Day,  My Pápá and Me: A Children’s Book About Our Journey With Dementia, and Niko and Kiki Go to Outer Space), two novellas (A Wynter’s Tale and John of Art), a short story anthology (The Birds Sing at Dawn; I Weep at Dusk), and an art book (Tragic Distortions: Depression in Art: Teaching the Language of Depression and Anxiety Through Art). Ms. Lopes’ books are available as either eBook, paperback, hardcover, and/or audiobook through Amazon, Audible, or iTunes.

In 2009, she won 3rd place in UNICO’s Ella T. Grasso writing competition for her short story “A Breath of Freedom.” This short story is featured in her short story anthology, The Birds Sing at Dawn; I Weep at Dusk. In 2010, the band Black Lab featured Ms. Lopes' self-portrait photograph in their music video for the song, "Pictures of People," at the 1:50-1:51 minute mark. In 2020, Ailment Magazine featured Ms. Lopes’ photographic self-portrait in their inaugural issue illustrating her life as she struggles with depression and anxiety. In 2022, her photograph was featured in the Stunning New Jersey calendar. In June 2022, Ms. Lopes won The Writers Movement Micro-Grant which is run by fellow author, Lori Snyder. In October 2023, she read her poetry at a spoken word event in Montclair, NJ. In April 2023, Ms. Lopes' two art pieces, "One Brave Mother" and "Healing the Heaviness in My Heart," were displayed and sold at the "Diversity Through Art" exhibition made possible by the Metro Region Cultural Committee and the TILL Wave Gallery in Massachusetts. She's also been nominated for the 2023 Russ Berrie Make A Difference Award in New Jersey. Over the years, Ms. Lopes was also featured in several newspapers celebrating her vast artistic achievements.

All of her work is written, edited, formatted, and illustrated by Ms. Lopes herself. She also creates her own book covers and artwork for each piece. Aside from writing, Ms. Lopes also exhibits her talents through audiobook narrating, photography, screenwriting, digital artistry, illustration, singing, and songwriting. Her three self-penned songs, “In Recovery,” “John of Art,” “Despite Utter Chaos,” and "Wounded" are featured on her Band Camp website.

Ms. Lopes wrote two screenplays: a television screenplay (Desert Showgirls,) and a one-act play (The Fiasco at the Zoomed-In Manor). Ms. Lopes hopes that her six-episode television screenplay, Desert Showgirls, will be produced sometime in the future!

Ms. Lopes is a full-time caregiver to her father who is bedbound with advanced dementia. Ms. Lopes utilizes her knowledge of mental health and craftily integrates her own experiences weaving them into her works. The majority of her work reflects on several themes ranging from mental health awareness, depression, anxiety, dementia, PTSD, body positivity, and other essential topics in an attempt to raise awareness and help limit stigma for those who struggle.

Ms. Lopes writes stories that both intrigue and question society while attempting to bring everyone together despite the very thing that threatens to tear everyone apart—our own unique differences. Ms. Lopes aims to bridge the gap and unite us as one amalgamated planet through her written word and art.

Ms. Lopes' goals for the future include producing her own audiobooks for all of her poetry anthologies and her short story anthology. Ms. Lopes' current works in progress include her first graphic novel and her third novella.

My third children's book, Niko and Kiki Go to Outer Space, was released on March 23rd, 2023. This book is a dedication and ode to my sister who was the loving fur-baby mom to two beautiful Pomeranians, Niko and Kiki. Unfortunately, both Niko and Kiki passed away after long illnesses and they leave behind a remarkable legacy. Our whole family was devastated by the loss of both of these Earth angels as we were all involved in both Niko's and Kiki's upbringing since they were both tiny puppies. I wrote and illustrated this book both as a way to mourn the loss of our beautiful babies, and also to give a gift to my sister so she can always remember the wonderfully glorious moments of joy and sheer happiness both Niko and Kiki brought into our lives over the years.

In April 2023, I joined the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center’s Milestone Circles. As part of the C116 cohort, one requirement was to create a milestone I could reasonably complete by my graduation ceremony in July 2023. I wanted to create a literary and artistic work solidifying myself as a mental health advocate.

For years, I’ve wanted to create an art book called Tragic Distortions: Depression in Art. When I first thought of this concept in 2019, I envisioned this photographic expedition where I would travel throughout the United States and have my book feature my photography as shown through the lens of an individual grappling with their mental health. In 2023, a post-pandemic world, I realized that if I were to create this book, it would have to be on a much smaller scale, at least for now.

Fast forward to today, and here I present my completed milestone, Tragic Distortions: Depression in Art: Teaching the Language of Depression and Anxiety Through Art. This 140-page book features my artwork consisting of sketches, mostly self-portraits, depicting my own experiences. Accompanying my artwork are passages where I break down exactly how I feel to make them not feel so alone.

My ultimate goal for this book was to help raise mental health awareness by creating provocative thought pieces of writing and art as seen through my own artistic lens. I believe that I have an obligation as a mental health advocate to educate people about mental health issues in a way that encourages vulnerability and confidence to seek the proper care that everyone deserves.

Here is a little bit more about the book as a whole:

Tragic Distortions: Depression in Art:

Teaching the Language of Depression and Anxiety Through Art

This book is an all-immersive experience where the reader can participate and react using the journaling and sketching pages provided. The book features thirty-six sketches describing life with complex post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. Along with these art pieces, the author also delves into her feelings and emotions that she has struggled with her entire life. Through her words and art, Ms. Lopes completes the image of a woman trying her absolute best despite her daily challenges while exuding hope and resiliency.

Join her on an emotional journey as she shows you the “language” she uses to navigate her world through her art and written word wishing to raise mental health awareness. We must exhibit empathy, compassion, patience, and understanding for everyone despite their differences.

Thank you so much for joining PSG Lopes and supporting her on this vulnerable voyage helping her in her healing and lifelong quest

for inner peace.

Thank you to everyone who supported me and cheered me on while getting this poignant piece published. I feel that this was the most pressure I have ever felt self-publishing a book because of the nature of the subject matter and how important I believe this piece of work truly is.

My Self-Portrait was Chosen for Publication

in the Inaugural Issue of

Ailment Magazine March 2020

I was going through a tough time in the Spring of 2022. I was contemplating giving up writing and art altogether. I received a brutal rejection letter from a publishing agent for my memoir. I was in a rough place mentally. Unbeknownst to me, my sister had nominated me for The Writers Happiness Movement Micro-Grant run by fellow author Lori Snyder. One day I received a letter in the mail with a beautifully handwritten card, twenty-five dollars in cash, and the patch you see above with the words, "You can sit with us." Ms. Snyder's note was so encouraging and kind and was just what I needed to push myself to continue. I will always be grateful to both my sister and Ms. Snyder for this seemingly small gesture that actually turned into one of the biggest turning points in my artistic career! Never underestimate the power of human kindness. It can move mountains, my friends!
