Given the events in which occurred last week affecting the lives of 17 families, there has been a lot of controversy regarding the survivors and the speeches made in order to promote a safer school environment. Students and teachers talk of initiating walk-outs in March and other marches are also planned to support the cause as well. What I find interesting, are the comments I have read on social media regarding the walk-outs. Most were in support of the protests, but many others talked about how in real life if you walk out on your job you get fired. Even a relative of mine snapped at me when we discussed the walk-out. She replied in sheer disgust and indignation, “People have families to support and bills to pay. No one is going to walk out on their jobs. And the students will be too scared to walk out because they don’t want to get in trouble.”

This angered me especially the part where she said, “People have families to support…” Didn’t those 17 individuals who perished last week in that senseless act have families? The heroes and victims were all law-abiding citizens who did what they were supposed to do day in and day out and guess what? It didn’t make a lick of difference because they are gone now. So why are we so scared as a culture, as a nation, to speak out when grave injustices have befallen us? Why are we so reluctant to lash out in anger when we have reached our boiling point and recognize that enough is enough?

Fear promotes submission, and nothing will ever get done if we keep letting people of power dictate how we want to protect our families. So, if a mass walk-out is the only way for people to finally get the picture that people are mad as hell and they aren’t going to stand by like helpless sheep for their lives to be suddenly taken away at any given moment. Those brave individuals are choosing to challenge the system, break away from fear, and do something about it to reclaim their power. I commend those who spoke out so passionately about what they witnessed and endured. This is indeed a tragedy that should have never happened. I stand by you all. Walk out and continue to be brave. Because, really, what is money in your pocket earned from meaningless jobs when you don’t have “families to support” any longer?
